Sometimes hair loss is inevitable, but for many people, the factors leading to hair loss in men are things that can be controlled! Unhealthy Eating Habits
An unhealthy diet can lead to numerous health problems, and one of them is poor hair quality. Since hair is made of protein, a diet low in protein is obviously bad news. Low iron or low vitamin C can also affect hair growth and hair loss. That being said, if you’re planning on chugging protein shakes all day long, too much protein can be just as detrimental to your scalp because a protein-rich diet without enough carbohydrates can cause other nutritional shortages. As long as you are eating healthy food and maintaining a balanced diet, your eating habits should not influence hair loss.

 

Too Much Stress
Not only can being too stressed affect your mental and physical health, it is also one of the causes of hair loss in men. One way that stress causes balding is by pushing large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase that can lead to hair loss when brushing. The second way is when the body attacks its own hair follicles due to an autoimmune response to extreme stress. The third way is known as trichotillomania. This is essentially the urge to pull hair from your head and face out of frustration.


Heredity

While there are external factors that contribute to hair loss, sometimes there isn’t much you can do. You may be able to reduce your chances of losing too much hair by adopting a healthier, active lifestyle, but if hair loss runs in your family, it may be something you have to accept as out of your control.

 

Dramatic Weight Loss
Rapid or significant weight loss can lead to hair loss because of the strain this change places on the body. If you notice your hair shedding, and appearing noticeably sparser after you’ve lost weight, this is likely a temporary situation, and once you develop a healthy balance of nutrition and exercise, and stabilize your body, your hair’s condition may improve.

 

Aging
A person’s genetics and age contribute to how quickly their hair loss happens. Men who have excessive hair loss usually lose most of their hair before they reach 30 years old, while others don’t see issues until their late 30s or 40s. Men who suffer from male pattern baldness may notice different periods of hair growth; some slow and some rapid, and some periods where there is no hair loss at all.

 

Thyroid Problems
The thyroid may be a relatively small part of the human body, but it is a huge contributor of the body’s metabolic functions. Hypothyroidism, a common condition where your thyroid is under active, can lead to several major health problems including cancer. One of the health problems linked to hypothyroidism is hair loss for both men and women.

 

Smoking Habits
Smoking has also been connected to hair loss, so if you haven’t found another reason to quit, now might be the time to ditch the pack. Smoking in general poisons the body, so it’s no wonder it leads to faulty hair follicles. Smoking not only leads to hair loss for both men and women, but it also increases facial wrinkles and gray hair.

 

Sleep Deprivation
If you are not getting enough sleep at night, it will not only create bags under your eyes, but it may also be a factor that leads to hair loss. Sleep disorders like insomnia and narcolepsy can influence the health of your hair and if these disorders are not properly treated, the hair loss may lead to baldness.

Medication and Drug Use

Most medications are intended to achieve a certain purpose, but many of them come with their own side effects. Some of the side effects may include hair loss. There are a variety of prescription drugs that affect hair loss, including blood thinners, beta-blockers, and antidepressants. Excessive vitamin A can also contribute to hair loss and it is the base in some acne treatments. Male hormone treatments including testosterone and steroids can also contribute to hair loss.

 

Alopecia
Out of all of these causes for hair loss in men, alopecia is one of the most common. This is a condition when the hair follicle shrinks, and this is caused by heredity, hormones, and age. Each hair growth cycle gradually produces shorter, finer, less visible hair, and over time, new follicles become incapable of producing visible hair.
