Anti-Aging Tips for Men

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | October 9th, 2019 | Blog

While it might seem that only women are concerned with growing older, men also struggle with early signs of aging and often seek ways to keep their skin healthy and vibrant into their later adult years. For most men, however, the goal isn’t to look two decades younger, but rather to look well rested, healthier, and be a better version of their current selves. Men can go from having dull, lifeless skin and adult acne to having fresh, clear skin that is supple and smooth. There are many anti-aging treatments on the market to choose from, but if a more natural lifestyle change is your goal, here are some trustworthy anti-aging tips for men that won’t disappoint!

Moisturize Twice Daily

The skin is the largest organ in the body, yet for many men it is the most neglected. The first place that you will notice signs of aging is usually your face, whether it was caused by cellular, physical, or hormonal damage. To slow down the aging process, you need to care for the skin on your face by choosing certain products that work best with your skin type. The different skin types are normal, dry, combination, oily, and sensitive. It’s important to moisturize twice daily, once in the morning after you wash your face, and then before bed after you wash your face again. If you can get in the habit of moisturizing your skin daily, you can stave off the signs of aging and keep your skin cells healthier.

Avoid Too Much Sun and Wear Sunscreen

Unless you live in a cave, it’s unlikely that you can avoid the sun completely; however, sun damage is one of the primary causes of aging skin. Anytime you go outdoors you should apply sun protection and reapply it every hour or two. Depending on the level of SPF, you may need to apply more regularly throughout the day. If you notice that your skin is starting to burn or turn red, it’s a sign that your skin has already been damaged, so try to avoid too much sun exposure during the hottest and brightest times of the day. There are some great facial moisturizers that include SPF, so that you can apply it quickly before you leave to go outdoors.

Use Eye Cream

The delicate skin around our eyes is one of the first places on our face that we notice signs of aging. Preventative measures always work best, so ensure that you use an eye cream to reduce the dark circles under your eyes, firm up your skin, and leave you looking and feeling more energized and refreshed. Find an option that contains caffeine, as it stimulates blood flow to the eye area and reduces puffiness. To apply it gently without tugging on your eyes too much, use your ring finger, as it applies the least amount of pressure compared to your other fingers.

Wash Face before Bed

Especially if you work long hours, the last thing you want to do before bed is take care of your skin; however, skipping this step can leave you more prone to acne and wrinkles. You should always wash your face before you go to bed, to remove the daily build up of dirt, oils, pollution, and dead skin cells. This gunk on your face can lead to blemishes and spots, but with a good facial cleanser you can wash away the dirt and pollution and give your skin a fresh surface to breathe through. Another helpful tip is to wash your face with cold water to plump up and hydrate your skin and close your pores so that dirt does not get back in easily.

Use Aftershave Balm

Many men skip this step after shaving, but using an aftershave balm can help you fight aging! Since shaving can lead to dry, rough, patchy skin that can peel or crack if you live in a cold climate, aftershave balm can seal in moisture while also reducing redness, bumps, and ingrown hairs. Choose an option that has aloe vera or vitamin E, which help the skin to calm down and strengthen the dermal layer.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

If it’s possible to get through the morning without it, it might be time to ditch the caffeine. You should also reduce or cut out alcohol as it severely dehydrates your body and skin. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels and makes blemishes more visible. It also increases liver damage which doesn’t help your skin at all. If you still want to enjoy a drink here and there, keep your intake to a minimum. If you need that boost in the morning, replace your morning coffee with lemon water instead. Lemon water stimulates the liver and helps to flush out toxins so that you have a brighter complexion.
