Common Signs and Symptoms of Skin Aging and How to Reverse Them

beauty concept skin agingAs people age, signs like fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear. If you are noticing early signs of aging skin before their rightful time, there are many natural ways to treat and prevent it. There are also some professional solutions such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for the face that can help with aging skin. Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms of aging skin and how PRP treatments can help bring back your youthful glow.

Sagging Skin

Connective tissues bind the skin together and provide elasticity and strength to the skin. When you are young, your skin is flexible and soft because of strong connective tissues; however, as we age, it causes these tissues to break down from the free radical attacks. Factors like smoking, poor diet, and excessive sun exposure create free radicals, which are responsible for causing oxidative damage (the main cause of aging). Hardened connective tissues are no longer strong or flexible, which results in the appearance of sagging skin.

Dull Skin

Extreme temperature, air-conditioning, and wind can cause skin to dry out. Aside from the dull, glow-less look, dryness can result in flaking, chapped, and tight feeling skin. If skin is not properly exfoliated with homemade/store-bought scrubs or treated professionally with microdermabrasion, dead skin can continue to pile up, causing more flakes and dryness as the layers prevent moisture from penetrating the skin.

Patchy Skin

Patchy skin is typically caused by differences in the melanin content on different areas of the skin. It can also be caused by vascular (blood vessels) changes, or by foreign organisms growing on the skin.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Crow’s feet are fine lines or wrinkles formed at the corners of your eyes. The way they fan out resembles a bird’s feet, thus the name, crow’s feet. These wrinkles are one of the first noticeable signs of aging, and can appear as early as the mid 20s. Collagen and elastin are two proteins that provide the skin’s elasticity. With age, these proteins reduce, and the skin slowly loses its ability to bounce back from a wrinkled state to a plump, hydrated appearance. The skin around our eyes is extremely delicate and has less glands that produce oil compared to other parts of the body. This means wrinkles can develop faster in this area. General wrinkles on the face and neck are also signs of aging and are presented as deepened crevices or furrows around the eyes, mouth, forehead, and neck.
