Spring and especially summer mean the end of sheltering indoors and getting out and embracing the sun. Shorts and short sleeves, sun tanning, and swimsuit weather are just some of the fun things to look forward to.
Since smooth, clear skin is the best way to enjoy many of these activities, spring and summer are also when people start thinking about hair removal treatments. However, waiting until the sunny season starts to begin hair removal often means having to resort to methods like regular shaving, waxing, or hair removal creams that are inevitably some combination of costly, painful, and only moderately effective.
This is why getting laser hair removal early is a good idea—it’s a long-lasting, painless process that will let you enjoy smooth, hairless skin from the start of the summer season right through to the end.
Why It Works
During the growth phase of a hair, a concentration of melanin pigments is found within the follicle. This creates an environment that makes the follicle perfect for absorbing the light and heat of a laser. As the hair removal laser is applied, the melanin-filled follicle absorbs the light, heats up, and dies off. The key thing to remember here is that only follicles in the growth phase have enough melanin for this to work and only about 20% of your follicles are in a growth phase at any given time. Consequently, laser hair removal takes multiple treatments to ensure all follicles are accounted for.
Compared to waxing or shaving, laser hair removal is the only method that guarantees hair-free skin virtually forever. We say “virtually” because laser hair removal treatments are also not—strictly speaking—permanent. Although many of the follicles affected will not produce hair, some can recover over time. However, having a few strands return after a half year is far different from whole growth resuming after a just days or weeks.
What to Keep In Mind when Seeking Laser Hair Removal
How long it takes to finish your course of laser hair removal treatments and how effective each individual treatment will be depends on a few different factors that you should take note of.
• Since the treatment is based on light absorption, dark hair on light skin is the most effective combination and blond hair on dark skin is the least. Different types of lasers and hair-darkening solutions can be used to overcome absorption difficulties, but the fact remains that some skin and hair types will take longer than others.
• Laser hair removal almost always requires multiple treatments set a few weeks apart to ensure proper coverage. Make sure you have the availability.
• Aftercare is extremely important. Do not use alcohol-containing products, dyes, or perfumes for the week following your session. There will also be apparent hair growth at the treatment site in the ensuing days but resist the urge to tweeze—these new hairs will fall out soon enough.
