How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Fall

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | August 30th, 2017 | Blog

Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean your vibrant skin has to! You can make simple changes to your fall skin care routine to get a youthful summer glow all season long. Taking care of your skin in the fall doesn’t have to be a nightmare—here are some helpful and effective fall beauty tips and skin care advice that will prevent your skin from looking dull, dry, and lifeless.

Stay Hydrated

What you eat and drink tends to show up on your skin, no matter what the season. That’s why it’s important to combat dry, blustery weather by drinking lots of water to stay hydrated. Water flushes out toxins from the body and keeps the skin moisturized and soft. Used in conjunction with a facial serum or deep moisturizer, water will leave your skin feeling soft and protected against the elements.

Exfoliate Regularly

One of the best fall skin care tips is to exfoliate. The summer sun and pool playtime can take their toll on your skin. Exfoliating helps minimize dark spots, smooth out the skin’s complexion and tone, and remove dead skin cells that pile up on the surface. As the weather cools down and dries up, the skin also creates less oil and can be easily irritated by environmental factors like wind, rain, and colder temperatures.

Once a week, give your skin a quick scrub with a store-bought exfoliating product or your own homemade paste and it will better absorb moisturizers, look smoother, and feel softer. To make homemade exfoliating scrub, combine two tablespoons of fine sugar and one tablespoon of olive oil. Apply some of the mixture to your face, lips, feet, elbows, hands, or other areas on your body using a circular motion, and then wipe it off with a warm face cloth. Avoid sensitive areas like your eyes. Always moisturize immediately after exfoliating. You can also opt for a professional microdermabrasion treatment or skin peel once a month or every two months.

Avoid Harsh Soaps

As much as scented soaps and scrubs smell wonderful when you’re showering after a busy day at work, they contain ingredients that dry out your skin. When fall arrives, swap out the scented soap for a hydrating skin cleanser or look for a body wash that is enriched with lotion or shea butter. The sooner you begin a steady routine of full body skin care and pampering, the sooner you will see your skin bounce back and look more vibrant than ever. At the Anti Aging Toronto Clinic, we offer medically-grade products with no chemicals and no parabens from AlumierMD.

Moisturize Daily

Unless you live in a warm, humid country, chances are your skin isn’t able to retain moisture on its own—harsh weather and changing seasons contribute to this problem. That’s why it’s vital to apply a deep-conditioning moisturizer every time you hop out of the shower or bath or wash your face. Apply it after dabbing your skin dry so the lotion can better soak in. Your skin will feel soft and smooth, and the protective barrier created by the moisturizer will prevent cracking, flaking, and peeling skin.

Don’t Forget about Your Lips

This area of the body is often forgotten when it comes to skin care. But the lips are actually very sensitive to weather changes. Without proper care, you will end up with blistered, rough, and cracked lips. Start moisturizing now before the weather gets too cold and dry. For best results, use a non-petroleum-based lip balm that contains essential oils and natural ingredients. Reapply as often as you need throughout the day.

Keep Using Sunscreen

Fall’s cooler temperatures don’t mean you can ignore sun exposure. Although the UVB rays that are responsible for suntans and sunburns are weaker during the autumn months, the UVA rays that contribute to skin cancer and wrinkles are just as strong as ever. Make sure you’re using a broad-spectrum sunscreen and choose one with a minimum of SPF 15. Apply the right SPF formula to your face, neck, and any exposed parts of your chest whenever you’ll be spending more than 20 minutes outside. Look for sunscreens with no chemicals, no parabens, and no chemical filters that are not only elegant, but they also won’t leave your skin white. Our skincare specialists can help you choose a sunscreen that’s right for your skin.

Listen to Your Skin

Everyone’s skin is different and it can change in subtle and not-so-subtle ways as the seasons shift. Pay attention to the signs that suggest your body isn’t getting what it needs. Dryness, sensitivity, and tightness can all be indicators that your routine might need adjusting. Your age, climate, skin type, and other factors all mean that there is an element of personalization in skin care. Feel free to experiment and, when you find something that works, stick with it for your fall skin care routine.

These simple tips can give your skin the boost it needs so you can get back to feeling confident and beautiful for the fall season.
