Infini Microneedling vs. Thermage: Non-Surgical Face Lift Treatment

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | January 10th, 2019 | Blog

There are many anti-aging treatments out there that claim to produce effective and dramatic results. Many of these treatments are invasive and require surgery, but many of them use other technologies to reduce risks and complications. Two of these treatments include the Infini microneedling treatment and Thermage. Both treatments claim to reduce the appearances of fine lines and wrinkles and boost volume in lax skin, but which one is more effective? Here is a breakdown of how each procedure works, and a comparison in terms of their downtime, results, cost, treatment length, and more.

How Do They Work?

Infini

The Infini microneedling radiofrequency (RF) treatment is designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, as well as firm up sagging skin and improve skin texture. By increasing the production of collagen, the skin becomes more elastic and youthful. It works by using RF technology and microneedling techniques to target the dermis. The device delivers heat energy into the dermis, causing the tissue to tighten and firm. It is safe for all skin types and does not harm the surface of the skin as the needles are insulated. It is effective on the neck, face, chest, and tummy but can be used on other areas as well.

Thermage

The Thermage treatment is designed to non-surgically increase the firmness and volume of the skin. It is generally used on the face, eyelids, back of the hands, neck, and chest. Its effectiveness is not as noticeable on other parts of the body, but the technology is being developed to be more effective at tightening the skin on other problem body sites. Thermage works by using RF energy to create a heating impact on the deep dermis. By generating heat in this area, the existing collagen is tightened, and new collagen production is stimulated. As a result, the appearance of wrinkles fades, and the cheeks, jaw line, and brows appear lifted. Patients typically feel a brief sensation each time the device is pulsed, but it monitors the surface temperature of the skin, so the practitioner can apply a cooling spray to keep the temperature low.

Comparison

Procedure

By comparing the two treatments, it is clear that the Infini RF procedure is more effective and less invasive. The skin-tightening device uses multiple tiny needles that directly affect the collagen and elastin, tightening the skin and increasing its volume. Even better, the gold-coated surgical-grade stainless steel needles are insulated, only delivering RF energy directly from the tip of the needles. This helps the skin remain calmer after the treatment. It is also different from Thermage because it uses fractional tissue heating, which is far safer than bulk heating.

Downtime

Both treatments have generally the same recovery time: three to four days. Most patients are able to return to their regular activities immediately after treatment.

Results

Since the Infini RF has been tested for multiple purposes, it has proven to be effective for more skin problems such as laxity, signs of aging, acne and acne scars, stretch marks, and trauma scars. Although minor results are seen immediately after both treatments, it takes a few weeks to months, as well as three or more procedures for optimal results to be visible.

Cost

The Infini RF treatment ranges from $800 to $1,200 per treatment, which may sound expensive but isn’t so bad when compared to treatments like Thermage, which costs between $1,500 and $5,000. The general recommendation is to have three to five treatments, with either technology.

Who Can Be Treated

Infini RF can be used on all skin types because the needles bypass the surface of the skin to target the dermis underneath. By avoiding the epidermis, post-treatment pigmentation is reduced significantly, and patients of Asian, African, and Hispanic descent can also enjoy the benefits of the procedure. Thermage also works on all skin types, but the mixed reputation about the procedure is due to how often it is performed incorrectly. Thermage is also less effective on patients with badly stretched skin, those with severe sun damage, and those older than 60.

Treatment Length

Thermage treatments take about one to two hours depending on the size of the target area. The Infini RF treatment can take about 45 mins to treat the area or more if the area is larger.
