A tattoo doesn’t have to be permanent; in fact, in the U.S. alone, 50% of people with tattoos plan to have them removed at some point. If you plan to get your ink removed, you may wish to consider laser tattoo removal.
The procedure of using lasers to remove tattoos has come a long way. The lasers now work to break up the colours of the tattoo using high-intensity light, with black ink being the easiest to treat. However, note that tattoos using multiple colours will require more treatments to remove fully.
Once you have selected a clinic to perform your tattoo removal, you will first need to meet with the laser technician to discuss treatment details. You will also need to discuss any medical conditions you may have, medications you are on, and any surgeries you have had in the past. From there, they will discuss and explain the risks and outcome with you.
The number of laser treatments you will require depends on the size and colours of your tattoo. Small and simple black tattoos will only require a few treatments, while larger and more colourful ones will require several.
Full removal may require between five to eight sessions, which a tattoo removal clinic will typically schedule four to six weeks apart. There may be some mild discomfort during the procedure, so in addition to being made as comfortable as possible, you will be recommended to apply a local anaesthetic combined with a cooling system, as well as to wear a pair of protective goggles as an added precaution.
What to Expect During Laser Tattoo Removal
During the procedure, the technician will perform a test to determine the strength best suited to your skin type. A hand piece will also be placed against your skin, with the sensation being described as similar to having a rubber band snapped against you. Finally, once the procedure has been completed, an ice pack and/or antibiotic ointment may be applied.
Is Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?
Even though it may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, tattoo removal using lasers is completely safe. The side effects, if there are any, are minimal. In fact, laser skin treatments are often recognized as some of the safest cosmetic treatments in the skin care industry.
