Plan Ahead For Summer with Laser Hair Removal

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | December 20th, 2017 | Blog

Just because we’re heading into the winter months doesn’t mean you have to stop planning for warmer weather. When the seasons change and things start to get warmer, you’ll want to take full advantage of the sun and that means getting your skin smooth and clear right from the get-go. Laser hair removal treatments are a great way to get your skin ready for sunbathing and are best done during the winter or early spring so you don’t waste time that could be better spent outside.

Why Act Now?

Since winter doesn’t officially start until December 22, it’s natural to wonder why you should be getting treatments that you won’t get to fully enjoy until two seasons later. The reason is because of how laser hair removal works. During treatment, the laser is absorbed by the melanin in hair follicles, which causes them to overheat and die. Melanin, however, is only present during the growth phase of a follicle and only 20% of your follicles are in this phase at any given time. It takes a few laser treatments for the full effect to be felt, and they need to be spaced out to ensure no follicles get away.

The spacing between treatments depends on a mix of skin type, hair color, and the size of the area to be affected. This is because darker hair is easier to treat since it absorbs light more readily and dark hair on pale skin is the optimal combination. Size matters both for how long a given treatment will take and the number of follicles to be targeted. Your underarm, for instance, would only need three or four treatments. The legs or back would take more.

By planning ahead now, you can ensure that you’re able to enjoy the summer season with no downtime.

What to Think About When Considering Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal treatments are individualized and customized based on your skin and hair types plus the area to be targeted. Despite this, there are a few things you should think about before meeting your skincare expert for the first time and having a consultation. Ponder some or all of the following beforehand and the process will go much smoother.
• Area: Upper arms, forearms, bikini zone, full face, or upper lip are some of the areas that can be targeted. Think about which ones you’d want made hairless first, or go for your whole wish list.
• Timing: Ideally sessions have to be schedule five to six weeks apart. Make sure your schedule will allow for this.
• Aftercare: Your skin should be treated gently following a treatment and you should refrain from using products with alcohol, dyes, or perfumes for the next week or so following a removal procedure.

Benefits of Getting Hair Removal Treatment in Winter

Getting hair removal treatment in the winter is great for multiple reasons. First of all, your skin will have less sun exposure. This is important because the waves transmitted from the laser that targets the root of the hair follicles can make skin sensitive, so extra sun exposure and UVA and UVB rays can actually cause irritation and redness, making treatments more painful and unpleasant. Additionally, the treatment works best to remove dark hair from light skin because the laser targets the pigments in the hair follicle. If the skin is very tanned, the laser will have a harder time targeting the hair, and the sessions will be more painful.

Another reason why winter is great to get laser hair removal is because of how treatments are spanned out. Hair grows in cycles, which takes several weeks, and the laser hair removal treatment aims to catch the hair during its growth cycle and destroy the follicles, stopping the process. These treatments are generally spaced about four to six weeks apart, depending on the treated area, and depending on the hair and skin type it can take three or four initial treatments before results are seen. Legs generally respond faster to treatment, but areas like the bikini area, under the arms, or the face, can may take longer.
