We associate the fall season with many things: leaves of gold and orange, a slight nip in the air, and pumpkin spice, but it may be time to start adding laser hair removal treatments to that list. This might sound odd at first blush since laser hair removal might seem unnecessary with shorts and swimsuit weather fast fading, but it actually makes a great deal of sense when you go below the surface. If you have been debating whether to get laser hair removal, here’s why fall could be the best time to act.
No Conflict with Your Tan
As with most cosmetic laser treatments, laser hair removal works in part by targeting the melanin (pigment) in your hair follicles. The melanin absorbs the heat of the laser more readily, which makes it possible to affect the hair with minimal impact on the surrounding skin. This is why laser treatments usually work better on people with lighter skin tones. If you’ve been tanning, however, melanin production in the skin has become higher than normal, which can make the treatment trickier or less effective. With tanning season over and enough time having passed for any existing tans to fade, there won’t be any competition around for your laser treatment.
Easier to Manage Sun Exposure
Laser hair removal only works on hairs that are in their growth phase, so multiple sessions will inevitably be needed. Between sessions, it is highly advisable to limit sun exposure since the treatment will make your skin more sensitive than normal. This is in addition to the above-mentioned tanning issue. The fall months don’t see as much sunlight and the chillier weather means you are more likely to wear long sleeves and pants. This makes it inherently easier to limit your sun exposure and requires you to take fewer extraneous measures.
Be Ready Right on Time
Generally speaking, a full course of laser hair removal treatments takes six to nine sessions, each spaced a few weeks apart. This can lead to it taking several months to experience the full battery of sessions. Additionally, it takes a little bit of time afterwards for the hair to finish falling out. If you start your laser hair removal at the beginning of summer, most of the season will have passed before you can enjoy and show off your smooth, hair-free skin. However, if you start during the fall, then you will be able to get everything finished well ahead of time. Starting earlier also means you will have more leeway if events come up that require rescheduling as well.
