There are many features of the face that people equate with youthfulness: bright eyes, long eyelashes, high cheekbones, plump lips, no wrinkles, and a defined jawline. Youthful faces typically have a smooth contour, beginning at the ear and curving down to the chin, and sometimes angling at the jawline. An older face will experience sagginess in these areas. As our jaws become more prominent with age through natural changes, many people want to know how to tighten their jawline naturally. Thankfully, there are non-surgical jawline treatments and exercises that can lift these areas to restore a youthful appearance. Here’s what you need to know about the best procedure for sagging jowls.
Causes of Sagging Jowls
The more we age, the more we lose fat in our faces, and as this volume goes away, the skin on the face begins to slide downward. You will notice more wrinkles and a drooping jawline.
It may feel great to lay on the beach for an hour to get a tan, but overexposure to ultraviolet rays can damage the collagen in your skin, and increase your risk of skin cancer. Too much unprotected sun exposure can lead to early signs of aging, including sagging skin.
Reduced Skin Elasticity
As you age, the skin below your jawline will lose its elasticity from a reduction in collagen and elastin production. Collagen is a protein that forms the connective tissue in the body and elastin helps the skin return to its normal shape after being stretched or pulled. As the body slows down producing these proteins, your skin begins to lose firmness and tightness.
Weight Loss or Weight Gain
Any dramatic shift in weight can cause your skin to sag. If you gain weight quickly, the skin will stretch to accommodate the growth. Losing weight quickly will reduce the fat under the skin, causing it to look limp and stretched for a while.
Genetics often have a big effect on how your face will age. If you notice your mother and grandmother with sagging skin around their neck, it is likely that you will also experience the same features as you age.
If you constantly frown, pout, or make certain facial expressions, this habit can stretch out the skin on your face and neck.
Smoking is not only bad for your internal health, but it also has a dramatic effect on how old you look. Nicotine and other chemicals found in cigarettes can damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. It constricts blood vessels, limits circulation, and prevents nutrients like vitamin A from properly absorbing and travelling through the body. This can lead to clear signs of aging, well before its natural time.
Tips to Prevent Sagging Jawlines
One of the best things you can do for your appearance and your overall health and well-being is quit smoking. Smoking has severe health risks and speeds up the aging process. It floods the body with free radicals, which increases your risk of various types of cancer. Kicking the habit sooner will help your body repair some of the damage and a lifestyle change will help you achieve some of your youthful appearance back.
Reduce Sun Exposure
As mentioned, the sun feels great on your skin. But too much UV light can cause premature aging and sagging jowls. Apply sunscreen to your face, jaw, and neck when you head out for the day and wear a hat when you plan to be outside for a long period of time.
There are many different jawline exercises you can do to tighten the muscles and appearance of your face. These include the following:
- Cow face: Let your jaw go loose and allow your mouth to open slightly. Protrude your jaw and move your lower front teeth over your upper front teeth. Raising your right arm, rotate your head to the left and look upward. Hold for five seconds, then relax your jaw again. Repeat these steps and hold for 10 seconds. After three repetitions, do the same on the opposite side.
- Yawn: To eliminate wrinkles, tighten flabby neck skin, and reduce jowls, open your mouth wide as if you were to yawn. Then, slowly close your mouth as you mentally count to 20, without allowing your upper and lower teeth to close. Repeat this exercise three times.
- Chew: Move your jaw up and down in a circular motion. Chew for 30 seconds, relax for a moment, and repeat. Do these three times a week and you will notice gradual improvements.
Fast Non-Surgical Ways to Tighten Jawlines
Dermal fillers can be injected into the jaw to create a tightened and youthful look. A gel is injected at several places along the jawline, and there are permanent options that require surgery, and non-permanent options that can be easily reversed and produce temporary results.
Botox, the brand name for the product known as botulinum toxin, is a popular treatment for eye problems, muscle stiffness and spasms, migraines, and sagging skin. It works by blocking a chemical that allows the areas in the injection site to relax. As a result, it softens fine lines and wrinkles. The results last for three to six months and when the face begins to return to its previous look, another appointment needs to be scheduled.
