Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a wondrous blend of natural healing and modern science. It uses nothing more than your body’s own restorative mechanisms to produce younger, clearer, fuller skin. A great deal has been said on the skin-rejuvenation and anti-aging effects of PRP therapy, but let’s spend some time going over what the actual treatment entails.
Walking You Through
It all starts with a visit to your skin care specialist. You greet each other and may exchange pleasantries, but then you get down to the business of having your blood harvested for near-vampiric rejuvenation. The amount of blood drawn is similar to that used for the average blood test, so enough to fill a small test tube give-or-take. The blood is placed in a centrifuge and spun rapidly for five minutes. You might even get to watch.
The spinning separates the blood into its different components. At the bottom of the test tube will be a collection of red blood cells, the middle will have a clear section of platelets, and the top will have a yellowish serum of various other nutrients. Only the serum and platelets will be used today.
Your skin care specialist will mix the extracted platelets and serum with various skin-enhancing nutrients and hydration factors to create the final PRP formula. The solution is then injected into the desired areas on your face using a mesotherapy gun.
Next: Science Happens
Once the PRP formula is injected, several things begin happening beneath your skin. Within your body, numerous variants of stem cells exist that await to generate into new cells to replace any that are lost from injury. The large concentration of platelets the PRP therapy injects makes your body call in some of these reserves to start forming new skin at the injection site. The stem cells, incidentally, are nourished by the serum that is included in the injection as well. Additionally, collagen production is stimulated as well.
The combined effect means that any lines or wrinkles at the injection site will see new collagen formation and skin growth to even out and smooth the surface of the skin. There may be also slight but short-term bruising or inflammation at the area—a sharp object was just plunged into your skin, after all.
Back in the office, you may feel a tingling or tightness around the injection site. This is normal. Once your skin care specialist is sure the injection has distributed itself properly, you are free to go. Overall, your visit has likely taken around half-an-hour.
Over the coming days, you will start to notice the effects of the therapy take hold. Since your body’s own healing processes are being used, it may be slower than you first expect but once you see results, they should last for two to three months. All that’s left is to go out and enjoy your radiant new skin!
